Terms of Service
Effective date: October 20, 2026
1. Acceptance of terms
By accessing or using JPEG Trust ("the Service"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, do not use the Service. JPEG Trust is a research tool developed by the JPEG Trust research team and is provided free of charge.
2. Description of the service
JPEG Trust provides tools for embedding, extracting, and verifying provenance metadata in JPEG and PNG images using the JPEG Trust (ISO/IEC 21617) standard, which builds on the C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) specification. The Service includes:
- Image metadata reading and extraction
- Provenance metadata embedding
- Trust profile creation and verification
- Batch verification workflows
- A Python package (
jpegtrust) and API
3. Acceptable use
You agree to use the Service only for lawful purposes. You must not:
- Upload images that you do not have the right to process.
- Use the Service to forge, falsify, or misrepresent provenance metadata.
- Attempt to disrupt, overload, or compromise the Service or its infrastructure.
- Use automated tools to scrape, crawl, or overload the Service beyond reasonable use.
- Use the Service in any way that violates applicable laws or regulations.
4. Your content
You retain all rights to images and files you upload. By uploading content, you grant JPEG Trust a temporary, limited license to process the content solely for the purpose of performing the requested operation (verification, metadata extraction, or embedding). This license terminates immediately when processing is complete and the file is deleted.
You are responsible for ensuring you have the necessary rights and permissions for any images you upload.
5. Research tool disclaimer
JPEG Trust is a research project and is provided for educational and research purposes. Verification results, trust scores, and metadata reports are informational only and should not be used as the sole basis for legal, journalistic, insurance, or other consequential decisions without independent verification.
6. No warranty
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
We do not warrant that:
- The Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or secure.
- Verification results will be accurate or complete.
- The Service will meet your specific requirements.
- Any defects will be corrected.
7. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, the JPEG Trust research team shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits or revenues, whether incurred directly or indirectly, or any loss of data, use, goodwill, or other intangible losses, resulting from:
- Your use of or inability to use the Service.
- Any errors, inaccuracies, or omissions in verification results or metadata reports.
- Unauthorized access to or alteration of your uploaded content during processing.
- Any third-party conduct on the Service.
8. Open source
JPEG Trust is open-source software. Use of the source code is governed by the applicable open-source license in the project repository. These Terms of Service govern your use of the hosted Service, not the source code itself.
9. Availability
We may modify, suspend, or discontinue the Service at any time without notice. As a research project, the Service does not guarantee any specific uptime or availability.
10. Changes to these terms
We may update these Terms of Service from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated effective date. Your continued use of the Service after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.
11. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the United Kingdom. Any disputes arising from these Terms shall be subject to the jurisdiction of the courts of the United Kingdom.
12. Contact
For questions about these Terms, contact the JPEG Trust research team.
